Self-Determination in the Basque Country The Basques, settled on the Franco-Spanish border, are a people who do not have a country that exists as an entity of its own. They are not recognized internationally. Their borders are not respected, and their culture is repressed. Thus the history of the Basque Country is one of contentious protest against imposed conditions, unremitting effort in defense of its identity and a relentless search for a means of democratizing public life. They have not been able to practice or pursue the right to self-determination as stated in the international covenants on human rights (above) and the Universal Declaration of the Rights of the Peoples from Algeria, July 4th, 1976, that, â€Å"Every people has the fundamental and inalienable right to self-determination. It defines its political status in all freedom, without any external foreign interference." Spanning approximately 20,000 square kilometers, with three provinces in the â€Å"north† under French rule, and four provinces in the â€Å"south† under Spanish rule, the Basque people enjoy a strong sense of pride in their culture. This pride stems mainly from their unique language; the true essence of Basque identity. Its roots trace to before the invasion of the Indo-Europeans, around 4,000 years ago. Therefore, it is the oldest known language in all of Europe. The Basques have struggled to keep language as the cornerstone of their culture. However, under Spanish rule this has been greatly challenged, especially in the 20th century. In the first decades of the last century, children caught speaking Basque in schools were beaten as a means to discourage the use and growth of the language. Bang and Olufsen uses the analytic approach to management. This is clearly seen in the phases of their design and production. Analytic design mostly structures their designs as engineering challenges (Lester, et. al. , 2002). The step-by step procedure of producing their products begins with the designers given free-reign over the design. It is, however, the engineers that are given the challenge to produce these designs realistically. Contrast this with interpretative management, which views designs as a â€Å"liberal art† (Lester, et.  al, 2002).However, there are some aspects of the B&O design process that bear a mark of this interpretative management system, specifically in the process where B&O acquires feedback from consumers to help update their design. The â€Å"artful making† aspect in the B&O design process may be observed in the designing phase, wherein the designers are free to design products with â€Å"substance†. It may also be seen in the Ideala b aspect of B&O, where they produce concepts and products that are innovative and revolutionary.It is interesting to note that Alessi’s design process bears a resemblance to B&O’s. This similarity may be seen in the stages of the design process where the product starts of with the designers and end with the engineers and the manufacturing process. However, what is unique about B&O is that their designers are given free-reign – that is, in Alessi, the designers are influenced by the engineering problems that will arise over their design concepts. The B&O approach is not entirely human-centered.Human-centered design is primarily observed in the goal of the design process: to create something that will suit the lifestyle of the consumer. It is however, interesting to note that the human-centered design is absent in the acquisition of feedbacks from the customer. B&O does not produce their designs due to the consumer’s negative of positive opinions on what th ey should do. Instead, B&O gives their designers the freedom and the challenge to produce their concepts from scratch.B&O emphasizes the importance of mobility, flow, and smartness among John Thackara’s design principles. Mobility is exemplified by the universality of their designs. Flow is seen in the design process itself, wherein the product is taken into a step-by-step process. Victims of Society in The Outsider and Antigone Both Meursault and Antigone are the protagonists in their stories. They have much in common, such as the fact that they explain their impending deaths as decided by fate, even though each seems to have an easy way of surviving. Both are willing to die for what they believe is right. The concept of fate is quite different between the texts. In Antigone, a Chorus tells you at the beginning of the play that Antigone will die. Antigone uses the excuse of fate to explain her own death to Creon, where as in The Outsider fate is much more subtle. First I will look at The Outsider and Meursault. Meursaults mothers funeral is the first chapter of the novel, and the introduction to Meursaults character. On the bus journey to his mothers old peoples home he says only yes to a soldier that asks him a question because he does not want to talk. This is an example of the short sentences he uses as dialogue and as narrator throughout the book. When he gets to the home, he does not cry or act sad, showing us that he is quite emotionless. He points out to the caretaker that he is just another inmate, with a little extra authority due to his position. Meursault does not recognise the caretakers authority as anything special, which is why he does not see the caretakers point, Meursault feels the same way about the judiciary in part 2. Camus makes the caretaker look stupid because he does not see the truth that he is just an inmate with extra work. He may be making a statement here about the way we try to make ourselves better by creating titles and roles. Authority is linked to fate in that they are abstract concepts and both can be considered opposites to freedom. During the first part of the novel, Meursault gets a girlfriend named Marie. Meursault does not care whether they marry or not, much like Antigone with Heamon. It could be said that Meursault agrees to marry Marie for the same reason that Antigone agrees to marry Heamon, because they both know they are going to die.
